About BP Oil
As the third largest energy company and fifth largest company in the world, BP is a well-known British multinational oil and gas company. With a history dating back to the early 1900s the company has been through its shares of ups and downs including the BP Oil Spill.
In 1954 after several name changes, the company became British Petroleum (BP) as they are known now. Originally discovering drilling for oil in Iran, BP made its way to the Americas and in 1965 was the first company to strike oil in the North Sea. Between 1978 and 2000 BP acquired Standard Oil of Ohio, merged with Amoco, and acquired Burmah Castro and ARCO.
BP has operations in more than 80 countries and employs nearly 86,000 persons throughout 16 refineries and more than 20,000 retail sites. BP has six different brands including:
- BP
- Arco – A brand of low cost fuels in the West Coast
- AmPm – Convenient shops located throughout the United States
- Aral – Provides fuels and fuel stations throughout Germany
- Castrol – A brand of motor oil and specialized lubricants
- Wild Bean Café – Operating in several different continents, this café provides food on the go
With multiple brands in a variety of industries, BP has become a company many people use for their everyday needs. Unfortunately, the company is still fighting to revamp their image after the biggest oil spill in the history of the United States.
Many people suffered at the hands of BP and other companies who were responsible for the disaster. If you or a loved one has endured any type of losses or injuries due to the BP Oil Spill, the victim may be entitled to compensation for property damage, medical bills, lost wages, and more.

Additional BP Accidents
The Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill was not the first disaster in BP’s history and some evidence points to the company having one of the worst safety track records compared to other oil companies.
Some other BP incidents include:
- In 1965 Britain’s first oil rig, Sea Gem, capsized after two of the legs collapsed during its move to another location. Thirteen crew members were killed.
- March 2005, an explosion rocked the Texas City Refinery killing 15 persons, injuring 180 people, and forcing local residents to remain indoors.
- In 2007 a BP pipeline in Alaska that was corroded leaked more than a total of 212,000 gallons of oil onto two acres in the North Slope Alaska area.
- In 2008 a gas leak was discovered in the Azeri oil field in the Caspian Sea.
As a result of these accidents and incidents BP has paid out millions of dollars in fines and, according to records from the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration, had been fined more than 750 times by 2010.
BP Oil Spill
In 2010 the largest oil spill in the history of petroleum occurred off the coast of Louisiana. The Deepwater Horizon was a semi-submersible, mobile, floating oil rig that was being chartered to BP from March 2008 to September 2013.
On April 20th, 2010, high pressure methane gas rose into the drilling rig and exploded. At the time of the explosion there were 126 crew members onboard including BP and Transocean employees. The explosion killed 11 people, injured 16, and caused a vast amount of environmental damage. According to some environmental groups the full extent of environmental, health, and wildlife damages caused by the spill may not be realized for many years.
