Who Was Involved?
While there have been conflicting reports as to who was actually responsible for the fire, explosion and subsequent sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil platform, there have been three primary companies involved in the leasing and operation on the rig.
These companies are:
- British Petroleum (B.P)
- Transocean
- Haliburton
It’s important to note that BP was the company that leased the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig from Transocean and then used the services of Haliburton to secure holes in the drilling pipeline by pumping cement into those holes.
However, due to various levels of negligence on behalf of BP and Haliburton, pressurized gas was able to escape into the drilling equipment, which then rocketed to the surface, ignited and exploded – engulfing the platform in the process.
Industries Affected By The Spill
With initial damage estimates ranging from $7 BILLION to more than $23 BILLION, the BP oil spill has had a wide ranging effect on many areas of the Gulf Coast economy.
Some of the primary industries include:
- Commercial fishing
- Real Estate
- Hospitality
- Tourism
Another important group that is worth adding to this list is that of the staff and workers from many of the industries that have been affected by this disaster. Not only have many of them lost work, but a considerable number have been forced to relocate due to the lack of employment that now grips the region.
