Transocean

Transocean is an offshore drilling company that rents outs out floating mobile oil rigs and provides the essential equipment and personnel needed to run these rigs. Most notably though, Transocean is synonymous with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill as one of its oil rigs was being used at the time of the explosion that caused the oil spill.

 The roots of Transocean can be traced back to 1953 when it first began as The Offshore Company. After decades of acquisitions, mergers, and becoming a publicly traded company, in 1999 it became Transocean Sedco Forex which was later shortened to simply Transocean.

In 2000 when the company acquired R&B Falcon Drilling in a billion dollar deal, Transocean acquired Deepwater Horizon, which was leased to BP between 2001 and Fall of 2013.

The BP Oil Spill disaster was the largest offshore oil spill in the history of the United States that killed nearly a dozen people, injured many more, and caused millions of dollars of environmental damage.

Transocean Accidents

Although the Transocean Deepwater oil spill is one of the worst oil spill disasters in the history of deepwater drilling, Transocean experienced many more accidents prior to the one in 2010.

Some other oil rig disasters include:

• In March 2002 was killed in an accident while working on the Transocean Leader less than 100 miles off the coast of Scotland.
• June 2003, an explosion occurred on a Transocean oil rig that was drilling just off the coast of Galveston, Texas. The explosion reportedly killed one worker and injured four others. Shortly after the explosion nearly two dozen workers were evacuated off the rig.
• In 2008 two workers were reportedly killed in an accident onboard a Transocean vessel.

Further incidents with Transocean include an oil leak near Brazil in November 2011 and several years prior a Norwegian boat servicing a Transocean vessel capsized and 8 crew members were killed.

Transocean has had continual issues on their oil rills and off board, and since the Deepwater Horizon oil spills the company’s reputation has been tarnished.

Deepwater Horizon Rig & the BP Oil Spill

The Deepwater Horizon was a semi-submersible, deepwater mobile offshore drilling unit. The rig was 396 by 256 feet and could operate in waters up to 8,000 feet deep and was one of 200 rigs capable of drilling in waters of more than 5,000 feet.

In February 2010 the Deepwater Horizon commenced drilling a well in the Macondo Prospect situated about 41 miles just southeast of Louisiana. About three months into the drilling an explosion occurred and resulted in the infamous oil spill and sinking of the Transocean Deepwater Horizon.

The oil rig had successfully worked on wells in various locations and during its operational lifetime it was in use 93% of the time. During its nine year operational term the rig receive 5 citations for non-compliance, four of which were for safety issues.

In January 2010 Transocean pled guilty to violating the United States Clear Water Act and agreed to pay $1.4 billion for its role in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Transocean was also put on probation for five years. Furthermore, the company was ordered to pay $400 million in criminal charges to restoration, resource, and research programs for those who are working on the environmental and human impacts of the oil spill.
