From Zero to Full Policy Limits in Less Than a Year
I just recently settled a property insurance case regarding an automobile theft incident. My client’s car had been stolen in May 2013 and when he submitted the claim to his insurance company, they gave him the run-around. They asked him to fill out form after form; submit to Examinations Under Oath; asked him for keys to car, which he did not have; asked him for all kinds of pictures, documents, dates, bodywork shop receipts from when he first got the car; etc… Needless to say, our client was disillusioned with the process. He told me later that he felt intimidated by the whole process, and almost gave up on it. When our client came to us, the insurance company had not paid him anything at all for his car. That was in October 2013. Less than one year later, we were able to obtain full policy limits for him.
Insurance companies are betting on clients who will get burdened with paperwork, disillusioned with the process, and just give up to refuse to pay them what they are duly owed. They tend to forget during these times that these people are their customers too – customers who have been paying premiums for years, so that their insurance company will help them if they should ever need it. Instead providing some relief during an already difficult time, the insurance companies are giving their clients the run-around.
