The side effects of Tylenol and Lipitor
Tylenol and Lipitor have been branded as two of the safest drugs approved by the FDA. However, there have been some recent studies proving these two multi-million dollar medications have caused severe bodily injury to some unsuspecting users.
Tylenol is the most popular drug of choice whose main ingredient is acetaminophen. According to the FDA, this ingredient is the leading cause of acute liver damage in the United States. Approximately 26,000 people are sent to the hospital annually and on average 400 lives are lost due to acetaminophen overdose. The vast majority of those individuals had no intention of ingesting high amounts of the drug and adhered to Tylenol’s dosage recommendations, however, with the maximum dosage being so close to overdose levels, many users do not realize they are taking too much of this common over-the-counter medication. The drug has infamously been deemed as a “silent killer” amongst those privy to the recent studies.
Women using Lipitor are now realizing the increased risk of developing Diabetes 2 by taking the drug. First released in 2007, Lipitor was marketed as a safe way to lower levels of LDL cholesterol thus eliminating the risk of potential heart disease in patients. When the highly critiqued study linking Lipitor to Diabetes 2 was published in 2011, it was suggested that patients using the drug were already at a pre-existing risk of developing Diabetes 2 due to the tendency of having higher blood pressure and blood sugar levels than the general population. Regardless, in 2012 the FDA instructed the drug maker, Pfizer Pharmaceutical, to add a warning showing the drug might increase the risk of Diabetes 2. In May, 2013, the British Medical Journal released a study disproving critics’ suggestion that pre-existing risk was the reason for the link. Instead, they showed that Lipitor increased the risk of Diabetes 2 in women more than any other statin drug in it’s same class.
