Rap Star Iggy Azalea Sued for Divorce in Texas
Amethyst Amelia Kelly, better known as Australian rap star Iggy Azalea, was sued for divorce in Texas by her former boyfriend, rapper Maurice Williams. Mr. Williams, who performs under the stage name Hefe Wine, claimed that the couple had lived together in Texas since September 2008 and had agreed to get married at an unspecified date. Mr. Williams claims that, under Texas law, their cohabitation and agreement to marry constitutes a common-law marriage, which allows Mr. Williams to file for divorce in Texas.
Music Rights Dispute Spurs Star’s Divorce in Texas
According to Ms. Kelly’s spokesperson, a major reason Mr. Williams filed for divorce in Texas stems from a dispute surrounding rights to her music. Earlier this year, Ms. Kelly filed a complaint in federal court that prohibited Mr. Williams from receiving revenue from her music. Last year, Ms. Kelly shot to the top of the charts with her hit song, “Fancy,” earning her millions in song downloads, publishing rights and concert appearances. If Mr. Williams is successful in pursuing a divorce in Texas, a community property state, he would receive half of her earnings during the marriage.
Stumbling Blocks For Divorce in Texas
A stumbling block to Mr. Williams’ attempt at a divorce in Texas can stem from the fact that the couple never applied for a marriage license, nor was the marriage entered into any state records. Another issue could arise in that, when the couple met in 2008, Ms. Kelly was reportedly 17 years old. According to the Texas Penal Code, sexual contact with a child younger than 17 is considered “indecency with a child”. The exception would be if the “child” in question was a legal spouse to the accused.
Theft, Sex Tapes, and Divorce in Texas
The dispute over the Hefe/Azalea divorce in Texas is the latest chapter in the couple’s tumultuous relationship. Mr. Williams has reportedly been shopping around a sex tape of the couple to various adult web sites. Ms. Kelly denies the existence of such a tape. Also, Ms. Kelly accused her former boyfriend of copying the entire contents of her computer’s hard drive when the couple lived together in Atlanta in 2009. Ms. Kelly’s spokesperson called Mr. Williams’ role in the relationship “predatory” and called the attempt at obtaining a divorce in Texas a “sham”.
