What Was The Cause Of The Leak?
There were a number of contributing factors to this devastating oil spill, which caused a chain reaction of further problems that prevented the quick closure of the source of the leak.
Some of these included:
- HEAVY MUD – The early removal of heavy mud from the drilling pipeline, which is used to help contain any rogue gases that may escape from the well location. In this instance, the drill operators decided to remove the heavy mud prematurely and replace it with sea water. This caused the gases that were existent in the pipes to rocket to the surface, where they ignited and exploded.
- CEMENT – The usage of an experimental type of cement that was created to help speed up the curing time of the cement that is used to seal off an oil well. It’s believed that this shortened drying time created more heat than the previous mixture, which then caused the gas to expand and the explode.
- BLOWOUT PREVENTER – The failure of a device known as a “Blowout Preventer”. This equipment is placed over the well location and is used as a safety device in the event of a potential explosion. In the event of a possible large gas leak, the blowout prevent is designed to quickly shear off the drilling pipes, which in theory prevents those gases from rising to the surface. In this instance, the device failed to do so.
- DEEPWATER HORIZON – The sinking of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig. Due to the gas explosion on board this platform, the subsequent fire was too great for fire fighters to extinguish. As a result, the platform eventually sunk, making any connection to the existing well extremely difficult.
- LOCATION – The location and depth of the well also played a significant role in prolonging the closure of it. Located on the Macondo Prospect, the well was drilled in approximately 5,000 feet of water. The amount of pressure, deep sea currents and other mitigating factors make it extremely difficult for relief workers to locate – and then cap – the gushing well.
All of which were contributing factors to the extended amount of time that it took for a relief well to be drilled and then finally a cap placed and sealed over the leaking well.
Who Was Involved?
While there were a number of corporations and manufacturers involved in this environmental disaster, there were four primary participants that had a profound influence on this event.
These companies included:
Transocean – this Swiss-based firm owned the “Deepwater Horison” drilling platform.
BP – formerly known as “British Petroleum”, this U.K based company leased the drilling platform from Transocean and had permission to perform explorative drilling operations on the Macondo Prospect.
Haliburton – an oilfiled and gas services company with dual headquarters in the USA and UAE, this company was hired to perform various operations on the Deepwater Horizon, along with the important function of closing the open well.
Cameron International – a manufacturing company that built the original blowout preventer that failed.
It’s important to note that while many of these companies are currently filing lawsuits against each other in an attempt to limit or avoid any liability, the US Government has been actively pursuing many of those involved in this incident, with the US Justice Dept having announced on 3/01/2013 that Transocean had “agreed to plead guity to violating the Clean Water Act”. The penalty for this was approximately $1.4 BILLION dollars.
Am I Eligible To Claim?
Due to the large expanses that this oil spill has covered, many coastal areas of the Gulf of Mexico were affected by it. Ranging from certain parts of Texas all the way to Florida, the lives of residents, workers and businesses in this region were impacted in a variety of ways.
If you or someone you love has suffered:
- Lost wages
- Lost business
- A personal injury (respiratory problems, skin allergies and similar)
- Lost property value
- Damage to real estate
- Damage to property
- Loss of reputation
…. Due to this spill, those victims may be eligible to file a compensation claim to help recover some of those losses.
