Musician Files Medical Malpractice Lawsuit After Botched Surgery
Terry Corso, former guitarist for the band Alien Ant Farm, filed a medical malpractice lawsuit claiming that a surgeon left a piece of gauze in his abdomen during a surgical procedure. Mr. Corso also claims that the surgery led to the derailment of his musical career, as he was unable to record or tour with his band. The band’s last number one hit was their cover of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” in 2001.
Details on the Medical Malpractice Lawsuit
In his medical malpractice lawsuit, Mr. Corso cited his history of diverticulitis. The illness arises when pockets in the colon become inflamed and infected. The medical malpractice lawsuit stems from a procedure Mr. Corso underwent in 2011 at Riverside Community Hospital. A year later, x-rays at the same hospital showed perforations in his intestine, as well as a piece of surgical gauze left in his stomach. After emergency surgery, he wore a colostomy bag. Another surgical procedure in March 2013 led to the removal of his colon.
Medical Malpractice Lawsuit Claims Patient Near Death
Mr. Corso also claims that, as a result of the emergency surgery, he was forced to eat through a feeding tube and wear a colostomy bag to collect his waste. He also claims that he had at least one near-death experience while in the hospital. “The nurses were telling me every five minutes to breathe,” he told reporters. The musician did not specify a dollar amount in his medical malpractice lawsuit, but he requested compensation for loss of income, medical expenses and attorneys’ fees.
Medical Malpractice Lawsuit Cites Open Wounds
Mr. Corso toured with his band the following summer as the perforations in his intestines grew worse. Doctors were unable to repair the perforations, and he had to drop out of the tour. According to documents in his medical malpractice lawsuit, Mr. Corso has lived with open wounds in his stomach since the colon removal surgery. He has since undergone surgery at the world famous Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. However, he anticipates that he will still need more surgical procedures to repair scar tissue.
Medical Malpractice Lawsuit Claims Album Release Delayed
Another factor Mr. Corso mentioned in his medical malpractice lawsuit is that his injuries led to the delay of Alien Ant Farm’s new album, “Always and Forever”. The album was reportedly delayed nearly two years due to Mr. Corso’s recurring injuries and surgeries. The delay in the album release, and the subsequent tour, cost Mr. Corso thousands of dollars in potential income, according to the medical malpractice lawsuit. He also told reporters that he will “never…be able to work the way I used to” and that “no dollar amount is going to make me feel better or healed.”
