Immigration Law Clinic Helps Immigrants Seeking Asylum

An immigration law clinic is helping immigrants who have escaped their violent homelands gain political asylum in the U.S. The Humanitarian Immigration Law Clinic, based out of Elon University in North Carolina, provides free legal services to refugees and their families. Since 2010, more than 1,300 immigrants from nearly 50 countries have received aid in their immigration law cases from two attorneys and several law students at Elon’s law school in Greensboro.

The students work around 20 hours a week at the clinic and gain experience in creating depositions, interviewing clients and appearing in courtroom settings. Students also learn about the different aspects of immigration law, including political asylum cases, refugee status and reuniting families torn apart by the harsh conditions in their native countries.

Clients Gain New Life, Stability Through Immigration Law Clinic

Clients at the immigration law clinic benefit by receiving services that allow them to start new lives in the U.S. Husnia Ayaar, a young woman from Afghanistan, was the victim of brutal attacks as she and her friends went to school. The attorneys and students at the immigration law clinic worked with her on her application for political asylum, which was granted three weeks later. The clinic staff are now working with Ms. Ayaar to get her the proper documentation for her to begin a job search, as well as bringing her family to the U.S.
