Helping the Hungry

by Martin Arguello

Over the weekend, I ran into this article:

As anyone who knows me well can tell you, I hate food waste. And I do what I can to stop it–simple things, like, for example, when I go out to a Mexican restaurant in a group of four to six people, we order fajitas for two. Usually, one order is enough for everyone with very little leftover. If it’s not, we simply add another order when it becomes apparent that the original order wasn’t enough. I far prefer to do that than to order two or three portions initially and wind up wasting pounds of food–usually enough to feed an entire family.

Another thing I like to do is to split entrees. Usually portion sizes are so large that one entrée is enough for two–maybe even three–people.

These simple measures are not only healthier and financially beneficial for you, they also help avoid food waste. Reading the article above made me realize that if we took all the wasted food in America and distributed it to the hungry…well, we’d pretty much eradicate hunger in this country. So, I asked our social coordinator and charity coordinator, Nishi Kothari, to look into how we could help. She found this:

Great job, Nishi! I’m very excited to announce that we will be supporting this organization through our usual monetary donations to charity as well as encouraging volunteer work. We will give our employee volunteers 1:1 paid time off credit for hours donated to this effort to help end hunger in our community.
