Geismar Chemical Plant Explosion Injures Over 60, Kills 1
Over 60 were injured and at least one individual was killed in an explosion and resulting fire at a petrochemical plant in Geismar, LA this morning. The blast occurred at about 8:35 a.m. The plant, owned by The Williams Companies Inc., is located about 20 miles south of Baton Rouge and produces ethylene and propylene, two highly-flammable gases.
Tests were performed to determine whether dangerous levels of chemicals were present around the plant and none were found, but local residents were still advised to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors shut, according to Jean Kelly, a spokeswoman for the state’s Department of Environmental Quality.
Many of the injured were rushed to local hospitals for treatment, including 3 – 4 victims that were removed by helicopter. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.
Our hearts go out to the injured and the family that lost their loved one. We are providing free case evaluations to anyone affected by the Geismar plant explosion, and offer our compassion and condolences for the trauma that was witnessed this morning.
