Domestic Violence In Texas Is On The Rise

by Martin Arguello

A report from the Texas Council on Family Violence has shown that domestic violence in Texas has been on the rise for the last few years. The report shows that fatal incidents of domestic violence in Texas rose from 102 in 2011, to 114 in 2012, to 119 in 2013. News reports have shown that the trend does not look to be on the downswing in 2014, with fatal incidents reported in Carrizo Springs in June, San Antonio in July, and New Braunfels in October.

Victim’s Family Raises Awareness of Domestic Violence In Texas

Families of former victims of domestic violence in Texas have spoken out to help those currently suffering in abusive relationships. Suzy Bianchi-Peters lost her daughter and granddaughter in 2011, when her daughter’s husband allegedly murdered them and set fire to the house where they were staying. A roommate of the daughter was also killed in the incident. The daughter left the relationship after the granddaughter alleged that her father and uncle sexually abused her.

Rural Victims of Domestic Violence In Texas

Numerous incidents of domestic violence in Texas in rural counties show the need for additional resources in those areas. In June, a Carrizo Springs man killed his two children and then committed suicide, reportedly to get back at his estranged wife. In October, a New Braunfels man shot and killed his wife while their young children watched. Also in October, a Comal County man shot his wife. He was later shot and killed by a U.S. Deputy Marshal. The next week, a Fayette County woman died in what police suspect was an incident of domestic violence in Texas.

Experts Offer Help to Victims of Domestic Violence In Texas

Ms. Bianchi-Peters recommended that victims of domestic violence in Texas find someone to talk to about their abusive relationship. Sherry Murphy, executive director of the Family Crisis Center in Bastrop County, told a local reporter that her agency helps victims of domestic violence in Texas escape their abusive situations, including pressing charges against abusers and obtaining orders of protection. Other experts advise victims to formulate a plan to get out of their violent relationships and get help from family, neighbors, clergy, government agencies and non-profit groups.
