BP Oil Spill Medical Settlement Cleared to Start Paying
This week, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed the last remaining appeals to the BP Medical settlement (http://www.nola.com/business/index.ssf/2014/02/bp_moves_forward_with_gulf_spi.html).
Unlike the economic settlement, which has been paying claims for over a year, the Medical Settlement could not begin compensating victims until all appeals were resolved.
Our firm represents over six hundred sick and injured clean up workers. These were people who worked cleaning up the beaches, containing oil at sea, etc. They all worked, directly or indirectly, for BP. Due to what can only be described as grossly callous behavior by BP—but, hey, this is the same company that pleaded guilty to killing eleven of its own workers—these clean up workers were exposed to all sorts of dangerous chemicals. And when I say exposed, I mean that many of our clients had Corexit literally sprayed on top of them. Many workers did not receive proper training, and many workers were sent out into dangerous conditions without proper safety equipment.
Many of our clients have no health insurance and have been made to suffer without medical care or compensation for four years now. We call on BP to honor its commitment and not interfere with implementation of the medical settlement like they have done with the economic settlement. Our clients went to work for BP in good faith. They worked hard and under brutal conditions. They were promised safety gear and training, but in many instances received neither. Through no fault of their own, they now suffer from chronic skin, blood, ocular, and respiratory conditions. BP, live up to your promises and give our clients the compensation and medical care you promised them!
