Flood Damage Insurance FAQ
Every single region in the United States is subject to floods and flash floods and, technically speaking, everyone lives in a flood zone. Unfortunately, homeowners insurance does not cover any kind of flood damage. Natural disasters such was hurricanes and tornadoes often cause flooding to occur. While everyone technically lives in a flood zone, those residents with homes in high-risk regions are more than twice as likely to endure flood damage as compared to fire damage. Flood Insurance FAQ
What types of flood insurance coverage is available today?
Flood insurance covers two kinds of insurable property: contents and buildings. As the names imply, property insurance will cover any property contained inside of the structure during the time of the flood damage. Building insurance, on the other hand, covers the structure itself.
What kinds of structures will qualify for protection?
According to the National Flood Insurance program (F.E.M.A.), flood insurance can protect condominiums, apartments, homes, and nonresidential buildings, including commercial buildings.
Does my homeowners insurance cover flood protection?
No.
Am I qualified for flood insurance?
In order to be eligible for the flood insurance, you must live in a community that participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
What are the coverage limits for flood insurance policies?
F.E.M.A. provides a chart which outlines the standard flood policy costs:
Coverage Type | Coverage Limit |
One to four-family structure | $250,000 |
One to four-family home contents | $100,000 |
Other residential structures | $250,000 |
Other residential contents | $100,000 |
Business structure | $500,000 |
Business contents | $500,000 |
Renter contents | $100,000 |
Does flood insurance cover damages from other natural disasters such as rivers, tidal waves, or hurricanes?
Yes, generally, as long as the flood water spreads at least two acres when restricted to your property.
Does my flood insurance cover water damage from wind-driver rain?
No, unfortunately the NFIP considers this type of damage to be windstorm-related. However, flood insurance will cover tidal waters or inland overflows, yet individual plans may vary.
Are there deductibles for my flood insurance coverage?
Yes, both building and contents policies will require separate deductibles.
Is there usually a “grace period” once a policy has expired?
Policyholders are covered for 30 days following the expiration date of their policy. If a claim is filed for losses during this grace period it will be honored, on condition that the full renewal premium is paid for before the 30-day period has ended.
Does my flood insurance policy take effect immediately?
Generally there will be a 30-day waiting period starting from the time in which the policy was purchased; however, waiting periods may vary depending on individual policies.

Homeowners policies do not cover flood damage, but they do cover other kinds of water damage. For example, they would generally pay for damage from rain coming through a hole in the roof or a broken window, as long as the hole was caused by strong winds or any other covered exposure listed in the policy.
