Ex-Wrestler Alleges Medical Malpractice Against WWE Doctor

Former professional wrestler Phil Brooks alleged that a staff physician for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) committed medical malpractice by misdiagnosing a potentially deadly staph infection. Mr. Brooks, who went by the ring name “CM Punk”, stated that Dr. Chris Amann diagnosed a staph infection on his lower back as a “fatty deposit.” Dr. Amann responded to Mr. Brooks’s allegations of medical malpractice with a $1 million defamation of character lawsuit

Podcast Reveals Medical Malpractice Allegations

Mr. Brooks made his medical malpractice allegations last November as part of a podcast hosted by fellow ex-wrestler Scott Colton. Mr. Colton, who went by the ring name “Colt Cabana”, hosted the “Art of Wrestling” podcast and interviewed Mr. Brooks. The podcast was the first public statement Mr. Brooks made since quitting WWE in January 2014. In the podcast, Mr. Brooks made several medical malpractice allegations against Dr. Amann and WWE physicians, ranging from not following concussion protocols to rushing wrestlers back into performing too quickly after surgery.

Cyst Leads To Medical Malpractice Allegations

The most serious of Mr. Brooks’ medical malpractice allegations stems from an incident in which Dr. Amann examined a baseball-sized cyst on Mr. Brooks’ lower back. Dr. Amann allegedly labeled the cyst a “fatty deposit”. Months later, Mr. Brooks had a Florida doctor examine the cyst, which was diagnosed as a major staph infection. According to Mr. Brooks, the doctor told him that “he should be dead” due to the severity of the infection.

Medical Malpractice And Defamation Lawsuit

Dr. Amann recently responded to the medical malpractice allegations with a lawsuit against Mr. Brooks for defamation of character. The suit alleges that Mr. Brooks’ medical malpractice claims have damaged his reputation and labeled him as a “lazy” physician. The suit seeks $1 million in compensatory damages and an undisclosed amount in punitive damages. The suit alleges that all of Mr. Brooks’ medical malpractice claims are false. Dr. Amann stated that Mr. Brooks never asked him to look at the cyst on his back and that he followed proper concussion protocols.
